I recently wrote my first article for Denver Style Magazine life-luggage-treasures-in-my-suitcase still very excited about that but I digress. The article was simply talking about how moving continents shifted my view on clothes. I realized all this when I had to make the tough decision on choosing what fashionable clothes I was going to pack with me. I had a bunch of “just in case clothes”. These clothes were fashion pieces that were able to be worn in several different ways creating different fashion forward looks. It was in that moment that I decided not to get swallowed by fast fashion and be more aware of what clothes I was going to purchase.
When I looked in my closet I had clothes that were still functional, that I owned for more than 2 years, yet they were pretty much still in style and withstood the test of fashion time. When I had given away other pieces simply because they had become outdated, with no chance of ever being back in fashion, the remaining pieces became my timeless transcend-able outfits. They had now moved to the closet section of staple.
My outlook in fashion has been forever changed as I decided moving forward to make purchases that would serve to this effect. I mean don’t be mistaken, there is definitely going to be the usual one offs clothes that are for the moment but the urge to buy trend clothes has significantly dropped. Lets take for example the jumpsuit that am wearing, which is definitely one of my favorites. I have owned it for 3 years, can still rock it several ways and the really cool part is that I don’t see it going out of style anytime soon. I have worn this jumpsuit with either heels, converse sneakers or sandals and it easily transitions from day to night depending on how I dress it.
So the clothes that we do decide to buy need to have the ability to outlast trends and remain in our closet for a long time. In short, when you wear them you do not want to look like a time traveler from the 1900’s. Be selective and intentionally stylish with the clothes you buy. Make them last forever.
